Do We Still Need Architects? AI and the Future of the Built Environment

In August, Inner West Startups + Tech teamed up with Proptech Australia for a panel on what AI means for architecture and the built environment.

Thursday 20 August 2026

Red Mill Rum, 176 Mullens St, Rozelle NSW 2039

You'd have to be living under a rock to have missed how quickly AI is moving into every industry. But architecture had been flying under the radar, until now.

Generative design tools can turn a prompt into a building model. Feasibility work that once took weeks can now take minutes. AI is even checking plans against planning controls.

So what happens to a profession that takes six years to enter and is protected by registration? Is this architecture's Uber moment? Or are judgement, liability and professional sign-off a moat that AI simply can't cross?

The panel brought together people working on the frontline of design, technology and delivery to unpack what's genuinely changing, what's being overstated, and what it all means for the people designing and building our cities.

The panel
